Botox history

 

Botulinum toxin and its effect on nervous system has been known for a long time since using contaminated sausages and in 1895, scientist discovered the cause of this poison which was  a bacterial pathogen. In 1940, this poison was isolated and condensed from bacterium called clostridium botulinum. In 1970, this medicine was tested on people with strabismus or spasm of the eyelids, and in 1989 it was confirmed as a medicine to cure strabismus and spasm of the eyelids by the US Food and Drug Administration.

At the time of treatment, the effects of this drug on smoothing the wrinkles around eyes as well as forehead were discovered therefore it has been started to be used. Of course in 2002, the US Food and Drug Administration approved it to remove the wrinkles between eyebrows for 18 to 65-years-old people. Nowadays Botox injection is considered as the most common methods in beauty treatment around the world.

 

 

What’s Botox?

 

In fact, Botox is extracted from the toxic of a bacterium called clostridium botulinum that Botulinum toxin is its brand name. After injection, the poison paralyzes muscles temporarily in the area and prevents their contraction. Therefore it improves the lines and wrinkles caused by face muscles movements especially in forehead, between eyebrows and around eyes. Absolutely, Botox effect will disappear after 3 to 6 month and the muscles will return to their primary condition.

Some wrinkles of human face are appeared by contraction of muscles under the skin that are called dynamic-type wrinkles such as frown lines, crow’s feet and laugh lines. Complications of Botox injection

Who shouldn’t receive Botox injection?

Botox injection is almost ineffective in those with infectious and inflammatory diseases in or around their face, those with a history of Botox allergy, women who are pregnant or are feeding their babies, people who use heart medications, those individuals with a very thick skin or very deep wrinkles.

Method and durability of Botox

Botox injection is performed by experienced physician and as out-patient and only in less than 10 minutes. Since the infusion is done by very delicate needles it doesn’t have any pain therefore it doesn’t require to anesthesia.  After sterilization of face skin, physician inject a little of Botox to upper part of eyebrows, forehead and around the eyes using Insulin syringe. The patient can continue his/her daily activities after Botox injection.

  Botox effect will start two hours after injection and after three to five days is visible and will reach to maximum level after 14 days. Durability of Botox effect is about six months and after that it will disappear.

Aftercare of Botox infection

After Botox infusion for removing wrinkles, patient is advised to move the face muscles (frown and open it but not massage the injection site). The patient should not bow or lie down up to 4 hours.

He/she should not bathe, wash his/her face or make up till 24 hours. Also, at night, two extra pillows should be used on two sides of her face in order to prevent moving the face to left or right.

Who should not inject Botox?

  1. Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  2. Patients with acute renal failure
  3. Neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, Eaton Lambert syndrome and ALS
  4. Consumers of anti-refractory drugs such as Heparin and Warfarin
  5. Those people who have used Amino Glycoside (such as Gentamicin and Amikacin) within one week before forehead Botox injection. They can inject Botox one week after stopping the medicine.
